Bruce Kent (22.8.29–8.6.22) was one of the greatest compassionate advocates for disarmament and humanity:
• General Secretary 1980–85 CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament), Chair 1987–1990 and then held the honorary title of Vice President
• Patron of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign
• Vice President Pax Christi
• Emeritus President of the Movement for the Abolition of War
• Actively concerned for prisoners welfare and prison reform
• More recently, took part in the annual ceremony, London, to honour conscientious objectors throughout the world.
We were enormously privileged to work alongside Bruce Kent whilst volunteering in the CND offices in the ’80s. We marched with him on a very cold and wet Easter weekend to RAF Molesworth, Cambridgeshire, one of the sites for the many cruise missiles to be placed around Britain and Europe.
We were fortunate enough to have Bruce, as a guest speaker at the Richmond Air Base, Sydney October ’87, while a large gathering assembled in Alice Springs to highlight the use of Pine Gap in the USA’s nuclear strategy.
Bruce would have been truly elated with the achievements that ICAN has made in the last few years. All Central American nations now have ratified the TPNW, Guatemala being the latest. There are now 62 countries worldwide, and we wait in anticipation for our new PM, to do likewise.
