Sadly, David Heilpern’s well-written missive regarding non-compliant dog owners in Byron Shire will achieve absolutely nothing. The fact is, that unlike councils in the adjacent Ballina and Tweed shires, the Byron Shire Council is simply incapable of, or just couldn’t give a rat’s about, serious dog compliance. Never have, never will.

For starters, the mainly hopeless signage about where dogs should and should not be doesn’t help. Only dragging the selfish arses of serial offenders before the courts and the imposition of appropriate penalties will help what’s left of the wildlife and the sanity of people who don’t wish to be hassled by, or be in the presence of, other people’s dogs in restricted areas.

As a footnote, Byron police are just not interested in the issue.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. There is a chance of change ! , stop voting in this useless ” commercial greens” council that have been hopeless for Byron over the last 10 years.

When the council elections come up again people need to think about how they vote.

As we have seen in the recent federal and state elections , change only happens when people use their vote .

Byron has been let down by our current council . from potholes , dogs . parks and maintenance , beach erosions , developer control etc.
