World Environment Day Festival

A free family-friendly community celebration for World Environment Day will be held on Sunday, 7 June, at the Murwillumbah Showgrounds from 10am till 3pm.

Organised by Tweed Landcare Inc. and Caldera Environment Centre, they described the event as a climate-focused festival, which ‘aligns with the United Nations’ 2026 theme: climate action and seeking solutions for a safer, resilient, and sustainable future’.

Organisers say, ‘This year’s free festival includes solar-powered festival entertainment – supported by Southern Cross University’s Sunflower Solar Trailer – and brings together many local environmental organisations, cultural leaders, scientists, and artists to inspire community-led climate resilience’.

Event overview & headline stage program

Dr. Joëlle Gergis

The Sunflower Speakers & Performers Stage will host an engaging program throughout the day, guided by MC Sam Refshauge, Managing Director of Northern Rivers community resilience organisation Plan C:

  • Keynote Q&A: A headline exchange between award-winning climate scientist and author Dr. Joëlle Gergis (Humanity’s Moment: A Climate Scientist’s Case for Hope) and prominent comedian and activist Mandy Nolan. They will reflect on the path forward in the face of climate change.

  • Climate Resilience Panel: Key community leaders from the Regenerative Northern Rivers movement will lead a panel discussion on localised, community-driven climate resilience, featuring Plan C, Jagun Alliance, Imagine Northern Rivers’ Carmen Stewart and SEED Northern Rivers.

  • Aboriginal Use of Plants: Cultural educator Uncle Franc Krasna, an elder of the Goodjinburra clan, will present on the generational knowledge and traditional uses of native plants in the Tweed.

  • Live Music Spotlight: Renowned percussive acoustic guitarist and Bluesfest standout Jerome Williams will deliver high-energy performances and local Minjungbal Elder and acoustic musician Uncle Garry Kafoa will share stories and songs connecting listeners to Country.

Interactive & hands-on activities

‘Beyond the main stage, attendees can participate in practical sustainability demonstrations and cultural workshops running around the festival:

  • Natural Fibre Weaving: Join Minjungbal Tagalaka South Sea Island artist Kyra Togo at the weaving tent to learn basic techniques, explore natural materials, and create a unique piece to take home.

  • Cultural Fire Gathering: Jagun Alliance will host a traditional fire stick gathering and demonstration.

  • Earth Building Demonstrations: Rebecca Whan will showcase the art of sustainable, low-cost earthbag wall building.

  • Chemical-Free Bush Regeneration: Organic Landcare will run live demonstrations focusing on chemical-free weed management and ecosystem restoration techniques.

  • Family & Kids Entertainment: Susie and her crew from the Hoopla Kids Circus will provide family entertainment with acrobatics, circus tricks, and humour, alongside dedicated kids’ creative arts and crafts stalls.

A Waste-Wise Community Event

The World Environment Day Festival is proudly a Waste Wise Event. The festival will be utilising reusable foodware and an on-site wash-up station. Attendees are asked to BYO bottles, cups, and cutlery.

Kyogle bridge build completed in under three months

Kyogle mayor Danielle Mulholland says a new bridge on Gradys Creek Road, off Summerland Way and north of Kyogle, has opened to traffic. She says it took Council less than three months to build Methvens Bridge.
