I refer to the article in The Echo (6 September) ‘Disabled war veteran’s tiny home faces Council demolition order’.
Byron Council should collectively hang its head in shame. Just because the boxes in an office drawer aren’t ticked to the satisfaction of some micro-minded bureaucrats a human being is to be evicted. Not only a human being, but a disabled human, with PTSD, from a foreign country, who is doing no harm to anyone.
I wonder, if the tables were turned, how would those councillors feel if their tiny accommodation was destroyed because a local bureaucrat decreed the place did not conform to some ridiculous rule.
Every day I am more certain this world is becoming worse, choking on its red tape and self-interested power. Sometimes I am ashamed to call myself an Australian.
Where is the humanity in these fat cats?
Shame on them all.

For four decades The Echo has printed the stories some people loved, some people hated, and some pretended not to read. If you want us to keep telling the truth, the real truth, not the sugar-coated version. We’ll need your support to keep the presses rolling.
