A fond farewell to Mungo’s crosswords

This week we sadly publish the last of Mungo MacCallum’s puzzles. Before he died in 2020 Mungo compiled a large archive of crosswords for The Echo.

They look so uninviting and dismal. It would not cost a lot to change the name to ‘tiny homes’ and paint them pretty.

That could hopefully improve wellbeing and a sense of pride.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. Yes exactly Colleen.

What if our politicians stopped wasting our money on rorts such as ripping up a valuable train line for a free track for ‘cycling tourism’ for a few fit cyclists, which is costing $600,000 per kilometre to build, or almost as much as it cost to repair the train line in Byron for a train which people pay to use.

How many homes could have been repaired or rebuilt for people who’ve suffered so much in the worst flood in white history? Thousands also lost their cars in the flood and their inability to get around and do things they needed made life even more difficult regardless of how close to a train station they lived.

Do politicians ever give a thought to those people doing it tough or are they too busy wasting our money on, and talking about, tourism-of which we have quite enough-to care?

Do any politicians care about seniors or people with disabilites who are unable to drive or use buses, but need the accessible trains we were promised?

Trains are accessible to all, including cyclists with bikes, and there would be less monster gas guzzlers on our roads spewing toxic emissions causing catastrophic climate disasters.

    • you are actually completely wrong, the train line is a pipe dream, there is 0 evidence and 100% ideological arguments you have put forward, and keep putting forward, its the same as the anti-electric cars and the anti-solar dinosaurs, you are not so different.

    • How did you manage to get Trains drivel into a letter about the appearance of the Pods?

I might write a letter to the Editor enclosing a recipe for baked custard pudding.

Will you be able to work the train propaganda into that?

  2. Billy to Mullum to Byron railtrail will be the jewel in the crown of the Northern Rivers.
As for the pods, sell them off. They can go to rural properties and make granny flats in back yards.
