Tomorrow will see the first Tweed Shire Climate Action Cafe take place in Murwillumbah. This will be followed by a second Climate Action Cafe at Cabarita Beach on Saturday, February 22.

‘Climate Action Cafés are workshops that will bring people together to explore, connect and deepen ideas to reduce the impacts of climate change. We already have a palette of possibilities – now it’s time to prioritise these projects and commit to action,’ said the Tweed Shire Council (TSC) in a press release.

‘These events are informal, fun workshops designed to encourage discussion and decision-making on local community-led climate priorities,’ said TSCs Climate Change and Sustainability Program Leader Debbie Firestone.

‘The Tweed community has shown a willingness to embrace solutions which preserve and improve the region for everyone. We have the highest uptake of rooftop solar in the Northern Rivers, the biggest increase in electric vehicle ownership and a high level of involvement by the community in wildlife and biodiversity conservation efforts.’

Get involved

Wednesday’s session will start at 5.30pm and will be held at the Murwillumbah RSL at 10 Wollumbin St, Murwillumbah. The Saturday Climate Action Cafe starts at 12.30pm at the Cabarita Beach Bowls and Sports Club at Cabarita Road, Cabarita Beach.

‘The Tweed is unfortunately one of the most climate vulnerable locations in New South Wales. Many of us know first-hand the impact of extreme weather events on our homes, businesses, natural environment and personal wellbeing. And many of us also know how generously we rally together during extreme weather events.

‘As a community, ingenuity and can-do attitude is part of our local essence. It’s this willingness to roll-up our sleeves and act that Council is seeking to support at our Climate Action Cafes.’

Could you be a better councillor?

I had the opportunity to speak to the NSW Reconstruction Authority (NSW RA) last month. One of the matters I brought up was the proposed 57 Station Street, Mullumbimby development. It was clear that the only ‘community feedback’ they would be listening to supported housing development on that site.
