In preparation for a day when women will take over the brewery, the women of Stone & Wood were recently joined by local creative women and not-for-profit founders, to brew a beer together ahead of International Women’s Day.

Shift The Frame

The beer will launch at an International Women’s Day (IWD) event hosted by Stone & Wood in March. Guest brewers will included Maria Nilsson of Atmosea, Grace Robertson of band Royal Ratbags, Sophie Wilsch the founder of Shedding Community and more.

Stone and Wood’s Jess Flynn was the host for the brew which saw about 10 women take the morning off work to ‘supervise’ the brew and get their hands into the grain and hops. ‘We invited some change makers within our community and some creatives as well to join us for this year’s brew, and this will be to lead up to our event, which is happening in March.’

Inaugural year

Ms Flynn said the IWD event is called Shift the Frame, and this is in its inaugural year. ‘We’re super excited to have everyone come together and really celebrate what incredible work the women in our community are doing.

‘This year’s brew is a rice lager, so it’ll sit around 5.2% when it’s finished. And we’ll also add some yuzu into it as well, which is going to give it a bit of a citrus twist.’

Ms Flynn said she feels it’s important to come together and and celebrate International Women’s Day. ‘To celebrate that we’ve come very, very far, but there’s still a really long way that we need to go. At Stone & Wood, particularly as women in a male dominated industry, this is something we do every year – we come together with the women in the team and brew this together.’

To help celebrate women, for the month of March, Stone & Wood, Byron Bay, will donate $1 per litre of beer sold at the bar, to the SHIFT Project, a not for profit based in Byron Bay that supports women through the challenges they face moving from homelessness to independence, from welfare to wellbeing.

The event will feature live all female with music by Darcy Dexter, and the Royal Ratbags. There will also be a female art exhibition as well as a screening of short films featuring women both behind and in front of the lens.
