Local police say they used a taser in the arrest of an armed 37-old man later accused of driving an unregistered car without a licence at Tweed Heads on Saturday.
Tweed/Byron officers say they were patrolling Minjungbal Drive at Tweed Heads around 12.20pm Saturday when they tried to stop a white sedan missing its back number plate.
They say they took chase when the driver of the sedan failed to stop, with the pursuit continuing through The Quarterdeck, Tweed Heads, where it was terminated after the driver abandoned the vehicle and left the scene.
Police say they found the man through inquiries at a home on the same street, armed with a knife.
They say they used a taser against him when he tried to resist and failed to comply with police directions.
Paramedics then treated the man on-scene before taking him to Tweed Valley Hospital under police guard.
Further police checks allegedly showed his driver’s licence was cancelled and the vehicle was unregistered.
Officers later took the man to Tweed Heads Police Station and charged him with various related offences, namely driving while licence cancelled, not obeying directions of police/authorised person, using an unregistered registrable Class A motor vehicle on road, using an uninsured motor vehicle on road, and hindering or resisting police office in the execution of duty.
He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Sunday.
