The General Manager of the Byron Bay Community Centre, Louise O’Connell, is looking to the future and saying goodbye to the Community Centre after six years at the helm.
Current Operations Manager Michelle Heuer will step into the role of Acting General Manager in August as part of the interim leadership structure following the planned departure of Ms O’Connell.
‘It has been an incredible honour to serve the Byron community alongside such a passionate and committed team,’ said Ms O’Connell.
‘I’m proud of what we’ve built together, especially during times of crisis and change. I’m confident the Byron Community Centre is in good hands as it continues to evolve and meet community needs. I’ll be taking a short break overseas before returning to the Byron Shire to explore new opportunities.’
A permanent General Manager will be appointed within six months, ensuring continued strong leadership and a clear focus on delivering positive outcomes for the Byron Shire community.
‘I’m grateful for the opportunity to step into the Acting General Manager role during this important period. My focus will be on supporting the team, maintaining operational continuity and ensuring the new leadership structure is implemented smoothly and with care,’ said Ms Heuer.
In addition, the Byron Community Centre is recruiting a new Relationships Manager, a key position focused on fundraising, donor engagement and strategic partnerships. The new role reflects the organisation’s long-term vision to strengthen sustainability and deepen community connections.
Bruce Clarke, Chair of the Board, added, ‘On behalf of the Board, I want to thank Louise for her exceptional leadership over the past six years. She has helped transform the Byron Community Centre into a vital hub for community connection and support. This interim structure reflects our commitment to thoughtful transition, strong governance and long-term sustainability.’
