Shark culls not the answer

It has been a confronting and devastating year with a 12-year-old killed by a shark in Sydney and another shark attack in Coogee over the weekend. The NSW government has said there is nothing off the table in response to the latest shark incident. But it is vital that we don’t just start going out there and randomly culling sharks.

Three lifelong football lovers, and proud dads, are bringing all-year-round 6-a-side social soccer to Ballina with a shared goal of keeping the community active, connected, and having fun.

Ballina 6s offers a low-cost, low-commitment, mid-week soccer option for players of all ages and skill levels. From kids and parents to seasoned players and retirees, the competition is designed for participation, enjoyment, and connection.

The founding team includes: mechanic Mitch Oke, high school teacher Jared Smeal and Tintenbar East Ballina Football Club member Quentin Leturgie.

Active and fun

‘We’re all dads, we’ve all grown up here, and we love football,’ the founders said.

‘Ballina 6s is about keeping people moving, meeting friends, and enjoying football all year round – and it’s affordable for everyone.’

Games are held at Saunders Oval, Ballina, creating a consistent, local hub for football and community connection.

Ballina 6s runs on Monday nights, deliberately avoiding clashes with other local sports. The competition prioritises fitness, fun, social connection, and affordability, allowing players to enjoy football without compromising family, work, or other commitments.

‘If we can help people stay active, connected, and smiling – all while keeping it affordable – then we’ve achieved our goal,’ the founders said.

First term kicks off Monday, 2 February.

Team registrations are now open and are filling fast. Players of all ages and experience levels are encouraged to get involved. Visit www.ballina6s.com.au or follow @Ballina6s on Facebook for details.

Ballina 6s also celebrates and supports local businesses, with sponsorship and involvement from European Automotive, Presto’s Brick and Blocklaying, O’Grady’s Transport and Removals, BM Kitchens and Joinery, Bondies at the Bay, Cafe Boker, Barden Constructions and Green Valley Electrical.
