Nearly $5,000 in unclaimed money is registered in state records for the Richmond/Tweed region, while more than $7,000 is registered for Coffs Harbour and the Mid North Coast combined.
The NSW government is urging residents to check the Revenue NSW unclaimed money register, with around $300 million described as waiting to be returned.
The state government says it’s holding more than 800,000 individual payments, including unclaimed business refunds, dividends and cheques.
Businesses hold unclaimed cash when they can’t return it due to missing paperwork or contact information.
But if further attempts fail, businesses pass the money on to Revenue NSW.
Businesses across the state last year returned more than $21 million in unclaimed cash to households.
Minister for Finance Courtney Houssos says there is also a process for people to inherit unclaimed money from someone they know who has passed.
