Lunchtime visitors to Byron Bay’s Jonson Street were treated to a surprise performance by two cheeky, very fancy-looking lions on Friday.
Operators of long-running local business, Red Ginger, announced the ‘very last minute House of Celebration for Chinese New Year’ that morning.
A Lion Dancing troupe from a martial arts school on the Gold Coast made the trek south to entertain Byron residents and tourists.
The Lion Dance is a performative duel between two colourful lions, each played by two people who must learn to move as one in a puppet/wearable art style choreographed routine.
The moves are all dramatically performed in time to live music featuring celebratory percussion including iconic drum beats and clanging strikes that demand public attention from near and far.
Byron’s pop-up lion performers could perhaps be considered cubs given they appeared to mostly be children, accompanied by adults playing music in the street.
Viewers appeared suitably enchanted and happy to celebrate the 2026 Chinese Year of the Horse, a cycle associated with great energy and potential for change.
