Thick dark grey smoke is billowing through the centre of Byron as firefighters are battling a blaze at Freedom Machine: Byron Bay – a Byron Bay bicycle rental service in Byron Street Byron.
Diversions in place
The fire started around 1pm Thursday, 16 April. Fire and Rescue NSW are bringing the fire under control.
There are diversions of traffic in place and as at 1.30pm people were being asked to avoid the centre of Byron.
The police and NSW Ambulance are also in attendance. Someone who was nearby to the fire when it broke out said that they could hear a number of popping sounds coming from the building which they guessed were electric bike batteries.
