Tree lopping accident

Around 2.45pm, on Monday 13 July, a Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance to a tree lopping accident near Grafton.

NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) crews are continuing to respond to a number of bush and grass fires across the Richmond Valley and Kyogle Local Government Areas.

RFS Acting District Manager Northern Rivers, Operational Officer Simon Jackson, said all current incidents are at the Advice level, meaning there is no immediate threat to life or property, however, conditions can change quickly.

‘Firefighters, supported by aircraft where required, are working to contain these fires and will continue to monitor conditions,’ Operational Officer Jackson said. ‘Drier than normal conditions for this time of year are contributing to increased fire activity, including a number of incidents where fires have escaped from private properties.’

Current incidents include:

  • Elliots Road Fire, Myrtle Creek – Being Controlled (620 hectares).
  • Pacific Highway Fire, Tabbimoble – Patrol (23 hectares).
  • Summerland Way Fire, Myrtle Creek – Patrol (50 hectares).
  • Busby Flat Fire, Busby Flat – Being Controlled (17 hectares).

Operational Officer Jackson said landholders are reminded to take appropriate precautions before lighting any fire.

‘This includes establishing adequate control lines, having sufficient water and firefighting equipment on hand, and checking weather conditions not only on the day of the burn, but in the days before and following,’ he said.

‘You must also notify the RFS and your neighbours at least 24 hours before lighting a fire, all year round.’

The RFS provides an online notification portal, allowing residents to quickly register planned burns via mobile or desktop.

Residents are urged to stay informed by using the Hazards Near Me NSW app or visiting the RFS website. People in affected areas should review their bush fire survival plan and remain alert as conditions can change quickly.
