Those wanting to make a submission on Byron Shire Council’s budget for next year, along with its operational plan, and long-term financial plan until Sunday, 31 May.
Council say in a media release, ‘These documents are key to the work Council staff will do next year and into the future and so far more than 130 people have shared their thoughts’.
Heather Sills, Manager Corporate Services, said while staff will not review the feedback until the exhibition period closes, some people are commenting on the potential for a Special Rate Variation in the future.
‘In the last two weeks Council has held two public information sessions which were a good opportunity for staff, and Councillors, to start a conversation about the financial challenges that local governments in NSW face, and the options that exist to provide extra money for community services and facilities,’ Ms Sills said.
Special rate variation not in 2026 to 2027 financial year
‘One of things that did get discussed at those information sessions was the possibility of a future special rate variation.
‘This was one of a range of things discussed and I want to assure everyone that there are no plans for a special rate variation in the 2026 to 2027 financial year,” Ms Sills said.
‘Councillors will however be discussing whether or not to ask ratepayers about their views on a future special rate variation at the June Council meeting,’ Ms Sills said.
Information about the budget, operational plan and long-term financial plan is on Council’s website.
Submissions close on 31 May 2026.
