The recent premeditated killings of several children in Australia by their fathers has raised the issue of filicide (the deliberate act of a parent killing their own child) alongside the issue of domestic violence (DV) and femicide (the intentional murder of women or girls) as key areas that need research to help understand why these things happen.
This Friday, 19 June (tonight) the Shimmy Mob DV Fundraiser is taking place at Coorabell Hall raising money for Monash Filicide Research, Australian Femicide Watch, and QSAN (Queensland Sexual Assault Network).
‘This DV Fundraiser is dedicated to supporting a deeper understanding of the drivers and challenges in the domestic violence space and promoting a message of empowerment and community,’ said organisers.
There are two parts to the fundraiser a Bellydance Choreography Workshop runs from 2 to 4pm followed by a show from 7.30pm with The Shiva Shimmer Squad, Empyrean Bellydance Troupe, Hadiya Bellydance, Bellyluscious Belly Dance, and special guest, Mana Aloha Troupe performing. You can do both or just dress up and come and enjoy the evening show.
‘Guests are invited to dress up and win prizes for the most sparkly! We are hosting a night filled with a gathering of rare performers coming from Brisbane, Tweed, Gold Coast and Byron, as well as personal stories, DV awareness and fun prizes,’ say organisers.
