The contentious amalgamation of four Murwillumbah schools into one mega-school has been abandoned, as promised by Lismore MP Janelle Saffin and then opposition leader Chris Minns if Labor won the NSW election. 

The community is outraged that 48 established rainforest and native trees planted by environmentalist Bruce Chick and students from Wollumbin High School that are going to be removed for a temporary car park. 

The challenge to the NSW Minister for Education, Sarah Mitchell that she had sprung the Murwillumbah mega-school on the community with no consultation and needed to seek further genuine consultation with the Murwillumbah community has been rebuffed.

The NSW Teachers Federation has claimed that the unexpected amalgamation of four primary and high schools in Murwillumbah will lead to a permanent loss of teaching staff in a visit to Murwillumbah this week.

Tweed Shire Deputy Mayor Reece Byrnes (Labor) called for the decision to close four schools in Murwillumbah to be reversed.
