Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, and the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) have today released the draft GenCost 2025-26 Report for public consultation.

The NSW government is preparing a final business case for cabinet which would allow nuclear submarines to dock at the Port of Newcastle or Port Kembla.

While the Coalition’s attempt to win the nation over on the promise of nuclear power was unsuccessful, it nonetheless has drawn attention to the fact that ordinary Australians are not as opposed to nuclear power as perhaps they ought to be.

There’s an urgent need for truth in political advertising legislation, but it’s hardly likely to be proposed by either major party.

Unless you’ve been blissfully slumbering in a very welcome coma, you’d be aware that Scott Morrison abruptly cancelled the terribly important contract we had with France, to build new submarines, in order to get fancy nuclear sink-boats from the US instead (in decades time and at incalculable cost, much like the previous contract). 

In the next few months we will hear a lot about how superior nuclear-powered submarines are. Vice Admiral Mike Noonan is even claiming superior stealth characteristics – which is simply not true. Yes, they tend to be faster. This is great if you want to go thousands of kilometres in a matter of days. But they are also much more expensive.
