Page MP Janelle Saffin and Richmond MP Justine Elliot yesterday turned to social media in an attempt to prove their credentials opposing CSG after an onslaught of opposition from National Party politicians, who earlier in the week accused them of cashing in on the issue.
But they also seem to be bucking a trend in their own party.
On Tuesday, federal environment minister Tony Bourke approved the construction 200 coal-seam gas wells at Gloucester, together with a swag of other contentious mining approvals.
The two north coast ALP pollies turned to Facebook to launch their petition calling on the state government to make the region CSG free.
Both MPs have posted links to the petition on their Facebook pages, which members of the community can print out and pass around for signing.
Ms Saffin said, ‘our community’s view is clear, we don’t want CSG mining in the northern rivers and anywhere on the north coast. Let’s work together to demand the National Party MPs make the north coast CSG Free. Please sign the petition and share it with your family and friends.’
Ms Elliot said ‘the state National Party MPs are behind the expansion of CSG mining on the north coast. When we get 10,000 signatures on the petition the NSW government must debate in the state parliament our community’s demand for a CSG-free north coast.’
