Tweed Byron police are investigating a break-in and theft of alcohol from a Terranora tavern and the assault hours later of a security guard keeping watch there by two men who then fled with more alcohol.
Police said they were contacted about an alleged break-in at a bottle shop attached to a hotel on Henry Lawson Drive, Terranora around 2am last Friday in which a roller door to the bottle shop had been removed and an amount of alcohol taken.
Police investigated and a security guard remained at the scene after they left.
At 5am a dark blue Subaru Forrester with two men approached the scene and bashed the security guard before fleeing with a quantity of alcohol.
Further inquires have revealed a truck was stolen from a business and was allegedly used in two break-ins at the hotel.
At 7am the truck was found totally destroyed by fire on Tumbulgum Road, Murwillumbah.
