On April 16, disaster struck the Japanese city of Kumamoto in the form of a series of earthquakes that killed 48 people and left thousands homeless.
Japan’s prime minister Shinzo Abe said on Sunday he will create an extra budget to address the economic damage caused by the deadly quakes.
And the US military has flown to their aid as well, with navy and marine personnel and equipment helping to deliver supplies to stricken residents.
And while the good folk from Federal’s Doma café now call Byron shire their home, they are doing their bit too.
They will be will be donating all of the profits from their stalls at this week’s Byron Bay and Mullumbimby Farmers’ Markets to the Japanese Earthquake Appeal.
Doma crew member Taka said, ‘We will send money to an NPO called Make the Heaven, which also made a huge contribution after Fukushima.
‘Right after the first earthquake hit they went to Kumamota and started helping. They know what the Kumamoto people need right now.’
So, if you are heading to the markets, drop by, drop some money in their bucket – and help make a difference.
