Byron Bay Cricket Club held off a rampant Tintenbar-East Ballina to claim a two-run victory last Saturday, and has moved into fourth place on the Coastal League table.

The Byron team got off to a strong start with both openers doing well until they lost three quick wickets. After regaining its composure the side went to post a score of 227. Chris Zygmunt contributed with 43 runs, backed up by captain Toby Schott’s 36 not out.

D Freer was the pick of the bowlers with 3/56 off three overs.

‘It is a big total for our home ground,’ Schott said. ‘We went out to bowl feeling pretty confident.’

Byron Bay picked up two early wickets and had
Tintenbar-East Ballina at 2/69 at drinks. The side needed a further 160 off just 20 overs and seemed all but finished.

But they fired up and got to within two runs of an unlikely victory.

If it weren’t for a run out on the last ball of the innings they could have tied the game.

The Byron side started to loose their mojo in the 40-degree heat as the pressure started to mount.

‘We dropped one batsman four times. The fielding also went to pieces towards the end of the innings,’ Schott said.

Byron were good enough in the end, and very relieved to able to put together back-to-back wins and move into the top four on the Coastal League ladder.

They are closely followed by Cudgen, who managed to beat competition leaders Teranora, to stay just three points behind Byron in fifth place.

Both teams play sides at the bottom of the ladder next week and are expected to win.

If so, that will leave them to play each other in the last game of the regular season, which is shaping up as a minor semifinal as it will most likely determine the team to go through to the final series.
