On behalf of thousands of Tweed ratepayers I challenge the General Manager of Tweed Shire Council to cancel the excess water bills covering the months of August and September for all households and businesses as some meagre compensation for council’s catastrophic inability to handle the salt water contamination of Bray Park Weir.
It is inexcusable that in this age of sophisticated weather, tidal and river-flow monitoring, council could not have anticipated an event which damaged thousands of plants and domestic gardens due to non-existant preventative measures and late and insufficient advice.
Whether or not an exemption is granted, the four majority councillors should immediately demand an independent inquiry into the contamination with those directly responsible stood aside until the matter is fully investigated.
Yet again, TSC has demonstrated it has barely registered the dawn of the 20th century, let alone the 21st.
The SES sent SMS evacuation notices to those affected during the recent floods; has nobody in Council the nous to do the same when the most important staple of life is at stake? Shame!
