The Picture House is turning 8

It feels like we were only just ringing in the new year days ago and here we are approaching Easter weekend at The Brunswick Picture House. It’s already been a whirlwind start to 2024 with their biggest and busiest program so far, bringing an eclectic mix of some of the hottest stand-up comedy, music gigs, film screenings and cabaret – and that was just last week!

Tom Cutbush, Outsider.

I read the  ‘Soapbox: You’re killing us’ in the Echo this week and I’ve been enlightened.

This open letter from ‘The Community’ implores tourists to stay away. It’s quite understandable given that the Tourist is the root cause of crowding, hospital delays, children mowed down, broken glass, ciggie butts, traffic misdemeanour, rising house prices, homelessness, rate hikes and ‘staying in (houses)… supposed to be our homes’.

Dear Community, you’re right! This tourism is the tip of the iceberg. Next thing those Tourist boys will be talking rude to local girls and not treatin’ them respectful like they should do. We fought these outsiders on Cronulla Beach in 2005 and the Tampa in 2001. This is Our Country, we’re entitled to more than sleeping in the park while outsiders sleep in our houses….

Or did I misunderstand? Maybe Mandy Nolan is just a funster, like Alan Jones, just taking the mickie eh? Just Highlighting the Issue.

Lucky for her, Xenophobia is a political term and not a medically recognised form of phobia.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. Not sure what you mean Tom,…the tourist boys ARE groping the local girls. I am pretty sure it was a tourist who felt the need to grab my backside NYE 2014…I am pretty sure the man who sidled up to me at the noticeboard in Middleton St to ask if i could give him a massage was not a local..
The man who told me at 8 am in the morning on Jonson St that he wanted to have sex with me was a local I had spoken to a few times but mostly they would be tourists.
Sexual assault and harassment are just another byproduct of the lack of social cohesion that results when tourism takes over from community….
