Extension of Byron Bay to Lismore bus trial announced

The Byron Bay to Lismore bus trial has been extended for the next 12 months ensuring that the 640X and the 641X bus trial services get a ‘fair trial’.

Nationals Parliamentary Secretary for Northern NSW Ben Franklin and the Member for Lismore Thomas George pointed out that they had listened to the communities positive feedback on the first six month trail and ‘worked closely with the Minister for Transport over the past few months to make sure our community’s voices were heard loud and clear and to ensure the bus trial is extended.’

Local Greens MP for Ballina had written to the minster several months ago requesting that ‘the Minister to extend this trial’.

‘I outlined that a six month trial wasn’t a fair trial. It is wonderful that they have responded, they have obviously heard the community,’ said Ms Smith.

The 12 month trial for services 640X and the 641X will run until 30 June 2019.

Mr George said the trial will continue to provide better connectivity for North Coast communities.

‘Lismore is a major regional hub, with good health facilities, particularly Lismore Base Hospital, as well as Southern Cross University and other services. Yet getting there from the coast by public transport is limited and can be difficult,’ said Mr George.

‘The bus services will mean North Coast communities will continue to have better access to these services in the region. We know how important better transport is for our regional communities, particularly here on the North Coast.’

The trial will continue to be overseen by Transport for NSW’s Rural Regional Service Delivery and Performance Branch and operated by Blanch’s Bus Company. During the trial period, the on-going viability and benefit to the communities will be evaluated.
