The weekend celebrations across the region marked the end of Reconciliation Week.

A new multiple occupancy (MO) for fifteen dwelling sites near Eureka was approved at last Thursday’s Council meeting, subject to conditions such as prohibiting holiday letting/short-term rental accommodation or the use of the dwellings as tourist and visitor accommodation. A ‘Management Zone Plan Illustration 6’ is also required in relation to the ongoing management and land use of the property.

During debate, Cr Basil Cameron moved that it be deferred to ‘seek a rural land-use management plan (RLMP) from the proponent’.

Referring to the rich soil and high agricultural values he said, ’We can’t pretend that there won’t be land-use conflicts. We need to make it clearer’.

Cr Spooner’s motion later passed, and he said during debate the MO will lead to a community title (CT). ‘There’s no community here’, Cr Spooner said, ‘just a few people with an interest’.

‘It’s part of what this region wanted… to look after land together’.

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.
