Byron swimmer airlifted to hospital

A man swimming in Byron Bay on the weekend was airlifted to the Gold Coast University Hospital, rescuers said.

A man has discovered the police have road spikes and will use them, after a car chase from Casino to Murwillumbah.

The man will face court today after an overnight pursuit of a stolen car that travelled through several small NSW communities.

About 12.50am today (Tuesday 7 May, 2019), police were patrolling Casino Drive at Casino when they attempted to stop a Toyota Corolla for a random breath test.

The Corolla’s driver did not stop and the car turned onto the Bruxner Highway and drove away.

The pursuit was terminated due to the dangerous driving of the Corolla which was later found travelling east on the Bruxner Highway at Parrots Nest.

Police followed the vehicle and the pursuit recommenced at South Lismore and continued through Tuncester, Boggumbil, Nimbin and Mount Burrell.

At various times it will be alleged the Corolla was driven on the incorrect side of the road.

The car travelled through Kunghur and Uki before road spikes were successfully used. The Corolla made its way to a service station in Buchanan Street in Murwillumbah.

As police were arresting the driver, a struggle ensued with officers having to use OC spray to try and remove the man from the vehicle.

During the arrest the accused suffered a cut to the forehead.

Inquiries revealed the Corolla had been stolen from Queensland earlier this month.

The 33-year-old man was arrested and charged with police pursuit not stop (drive dangerously).

He will appear in Tweed Heads Local Court later today (Tuesday 7 May 2019).

Mandy Nolan’s Soapbox: Shopping Centres Scare Me

I feel trapped. There isn’t a single time I attend where I don’t check my proximity to the exits, or imagine what I’d do if there was a fire, or worse, a shooter. The sense of being enclosed is unnatural, I can’t tell what time of day it is, I lose my sense of direction. It’s designed to be disorienting. It feels otherworldly. And never in a good way. They are designed to make you stay longer. They are by design, disorienting.
