Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary will be back up and running today after the recent devastating storms that tore through the Gold Coast.
As a result of the destructive weather, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and Currumbin Wildlife Hospital were both seriously affected. Fortunately, Currumbin Wildlife Hospital was able to remain open throughout the power outage, using generators.
Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary has also been without power since Boxing Day, but they say staff and volunteers worked tirelessly to make sure all animals were safe and cared for.
Not only did the staff and volunteers at Currumbin Wildlife Hospital have to treat existing patients with no electricity, there was also a huge influx of injured, orphaned and sick wildlife due to the storms. 120 new patients were admitted on one day alone.
Challenging time
‘The work of our hospital staff and volunteers over the last few days has been nothing short of amazing,’ said Senior Vet Dr Michael Pyne OAM.
‘It’s been one of the most challenging times we’ve ever seen at Currumbin Wildlife Hospital, and I’m so grateful for everyone who helped us through it.’
Fortunately, power has now been restored to the area, and the facility will re-open to visitors today, Friday 29 December 2023.
‘We’d like to thank the community, staff, volunteers and visitors for their support during this time,’ said Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary General Manager Travis Couch. ‘Our thoughts are also with everyone who’s been affected by the recent storms and power outages.’
