Anzac Day events in the Northern Rivers

Around Australia people will come together this Thursday to pay their respects and remember those who have served, and continue to serve, the nation during times of conflict. Listed are details for Tweed, Ballina, Lismore, Byron, Kyogle, and Richmond Valley Council areas.

It’s MardiGrass!

This year is Nimbins 32nd annual MardiGrass and you’d reckon by now ‘weed’ be left alone. The same helicopter raids, the disgusting, and completely unfair, saliva testing of drivers, and we’re still not allowed to grow our own plants. We can all access legal buds via a doctor, most of it imported from Canada, but we can’t grow our own. There’s something very wrong there.

I’m surprised to see that when you drive from Bangalow to Lismore via Clunes and Bexhill the speed limit goes from 80km/h up to 100km/h on these windy roads. But Hinterland Way, which was the Pacific Highway when I arrived here in 2009, remains at 80km/h all the way.

Please Byron Council, review this.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. The Pacific Hwy, along the now Hinterland Way, was 100km/h. Much less traffic on that road now with safer cars yet speed limit is lower which makes little sense to some.

Most of the country roads in this region were 100km/h which was too fast for unfamiliar city drivers, but reducing the speed limit on the larger and better maintained Bangalow to Lismore road ma be a little overly cautious. We could reduce limits to 50km/h everywhere if we like living wrapped in cotton wool….

Regardless, you need to be on our game more when travelling regional roads particularly as they are narrow and often have pot holes, animals, wet/dark/foggy conditions to contend with. Completely different for those who are used to city and highway driving.

  2. Agree wholeheartedly with Steve O – rural roads used to be unlimited; then unlimited, drive to conditions; now; all over the place – Binna Burra Road is 60km/h – without community consultation but in reaction to poor driving habits on a, in places, difficult road. Common sense has gone out the window with that, Bangalow Road and the Hinterland Way
