Vinnies and Fred’s Place are asking for the residents of the Tweed Shire to come together for a night and experience what it is like to be homeless.
The NSW Vinnies Community Sleepout will be held at Fred’s Place on August 30 and aims to encourage and support people to come together and assist in trying to alleviate some of the difficulties that homeless people are facing in the Tweed Shire.
To experience the hardships of homelessness, for just one night, participants will be given a piece of cardboard and a light dinner in a safe area before they go to sleep.
The need for people to recognise and assist in combating the homelessness crisis has grown and the are now more than 122,000 homeless people in Australia with Tweed currently having some of the highest homeless rates in NSW.
During the Liberal-National coalition’s 12 years in office in NSW, they utterly failed to successfully invest in affordable, public, and social housing in NSW which has left a large deficit of housing for people in lower socioeconomic situations. This is a contributor to the housing crisis currently being faced across the Northern Rivers region.
While NSW Labor are putting in strategies to try and alleviate some of the building homelessness pressure in the region there is still a need for immediate relief and help for people currently experiencing homelessness. Here is the chance to donate your time and money to support outlets such as Vinnies and Fred’s Place who provide extensive services to people experiencing homelessness.
