A record 80 new citizens were welcomed to Lismore City on Citizenship Day, says Mayor Steve Krieg.
In a statement, he said, ‘The new citizens have come from Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Denmark, France, Germany, Guatemala, India, Iran, Iraq, Kenya, Nepal, New Zealand, Nigeria, Philippines, Sri Lanka, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States of America, Thailand, Vietnam and Zimbabwe’.
‘One of the best parts of my job is to warmly welcome new Australian citizens who are now part of the common bond that unites all Australians and respects diversity,’ he said.
‘Australia is one of the most culturally diverse nations in the world, and since 1949, we have welcomed more than five million new citizens to our shores.”
He added, ‘The Lismore City Council, representing the Department of Home Affairs, organises regular citizenship ceremonies to warmly welcome new Australian citizens into our community’.
