Fear and ignorance should not drive abortion debate

I did not think I would need to defend the right to safe abortions again. Abortion is no longer a criminal offence in Australia. There are well-reasoned and effective legal structures around abortions based on healthcare and women’s choice. It is broadly accepted that if you’re pregnant, it’s your decision to have children, or not.

In paragraph one of ‘Reflections on Bondi attack’ (David Heilpern’s editorial last week), you note that you are ‘reeling, overwhelmed with sorrow, and yet, by paragraph two, as you have done for over two years, you shut down the voices of Jews, Jews who have fearfully endured the rise and thrive of Jew hatred in this country, fuelled by both actions and inactions of the Albanese government, Greens, teals, local councils, universities, media, and by hate marches.

If Jews’ voices had been headed by our government, this tragedy may have been prevented.

You say, ‘It’s not time to blame Albanese for failing to do what the Jewish community and Israel’s PM demanded.’

What other minority group can you imagine would be denied appropriate measures to stop thousands of acts and words of hatred that have occurred over the last two years?

Walk safely onto a uni campus? Too much to demand? Be able to wear a Jewish skullcap or Star of David in public? Too much to demand?

Maybe not have your business graffitied with Nazi symbols and hate speech? Too much to demand? All Jews knew this massacre was inevitable. If you talk to Jews you will know this. Their warnings were ignored over and over. Silenced. Dead Jews was the inevitable outcome of unchecked anti-semitism.

You only have to know history to know this.

You say ‘It is not time to stifle criticism of Israel under the guise of stopping anti-semitism.’It has become abundantly clear to Jews that much of the criticism towards Israel has indeed been anti-semitic, as Anti-Zionism is the now accepted and tolerated mutation. Just wondering if The Echo plans to do a ‘criticism piece’ on Iran or Qatar? I guess not.

You say ‘It is not time to investigate the possible failures of our intelligence services.’ Wow.

When would be an appropriate time to work out what went wrong and if there were failures in order to prevent future attacks.

Let me be very clear. What happened in Bondi is part of a global jihadist war only possible in an environment of complicity and encouragement. Each and every person who has marched shouting ‘Globalise the Intifada’ or ‘From the River to the Sea’ is complicit, as Globalise the Intifada is now here.

As it is in the UK, Europe, Canada and other countries where hatred, attacks and killings of Jews are daily occurrences.

This has nothing to do with a Palestinian state as history in 1948, 1967 and 2001 clearly demonstrate .

The goal is the destruction of the Jewish sate, the West and to create a global Islamic Caliphate. They have said it. Believe them. There are now ever-expanding no-go areas around the world. Christmas markets and New Year’s Eve celebrations in Europe have been cancelled. Israel is on the frontline facing this global peril. Ninety percent of the comments on the Ramallah Facebook news page have celebrated and supported the Bondi massacre, and many have called for the death of the Muslim hero who risked his life on that day. Celebrations have also occurred in Western Sydney?

Labour, the Greens, left-leaning media including yourselves have promoted a reckless narrative that contributed to Australia’s anti-semitism crisis. And now you all suddenly claim to care about Jews?

And once again, your editorial attempts to silence the voices of Jews.

Jews have been saying over and over that demonisation of Israel, perpetuating blood libels and denying Israel’s right to exist leads to increased attacks, including dead Jews.

The fact that it took a massacre before the media and political elite show a skerrick of empathy towards Jews is deeply heart-breaking and a shameful indictment on the attitude of the left towards racism when it applies to Jews.

I have read your editorials and letters to the editor over the last two years in horror.

It is time for the left to reflect. And it is time to actually listen to Jews. And not just the few outliers who do not speak for the rest.

Listen, learn, reflect, as there is blame and it is loud. It will not be silenced.
