Marine Rescue NSW volunteers say they are prepared for a busy Australia Day long weekend, with large numbers of people expected to take to the water across the state.
In a media release, Marine Rescue NSW Acting Commissioner Todd Andrews said the Australia Day long weekend is traditionally one of the busiest periods of the year for the organisation’s 3,500 volunteers.
“The Australia Day long weekend is always a busy time for Marine Rescue NSW.
“There were 119 rescues during last year’s Australia Day long weekend, with more than half occurring on Australia Day.
“We want boaters to spend their Australia Day enjoying our beautiful waterways, not at the end of a tow rope behind one of our rescue vessels, or worse,” Acting Commissioner Andrews said.
The media release says, “More than 60 per cent of Marine Rescue NSW search and rescue missions are in response to lack of fuel, flat battery or engine issues, which are largely preventable”.
“To help ensure everyone has a fun and safe day out, boaters are urged to prepare their vessels and act responsibly.
“Before heading out, make sure your vessel is ready.
“Check your engine and battery are in good working order
“Carry enough fuel for your trip, plus extra in reserve.
“Ensure you have the correct safety equipment on board, and that you know how to use it.
“Make sure everyone on board is wearing a lifejacket.
“Remember to Log On with Marine Rescue NSW via VHF Channel 16 or the free Marine Rescue NSW app before you hit the water.
“It only takes a minute to protect a lifetime,” Acting Commissioner Andrews said.
Marine Rescue NSW volunteer crews are also called to assist boaters who have misjudged weather and sea conditions.
“Before you head out, check weather and sea conditions and get updates regularly throughout the day as conditions can change quickly.
“You can access local weather alerts through the free Marine Rescue NSW app or contact your local Marine Rescue NSW base via VHF Channel 16 for up-to-date forecasts.
“Waterways are often very crowded on Australia Day.
“Follow the rules, take it easy and be courteous to your fellow boaters,” Acting Commissioner Andrews said.
