The annual Laverty Charity Golf Day, now in its 17th year, raised $22,000 and attracted a record number of entrants to the Mullumbimby Golf Course.
The event was held early in the new year and all the money raised was donated to the Brunswick Valley Rescue Squad (BVRS).
Mathew Laverty has helped to organise the event since its inception in memory of his brother.
BVRS helped so many people
‘My brother was in a bike accident 17 years ago, and needed the help of the rescue squad, so we decided along with our father, Sandy, to start this charity day,’ Mathew said.
‘There aren’t many people in the area who haven’t been helped by the rescue squad, or don’t know someone who has been helped. It’s just a really good cause, and they always need a bit of extra money.
‘A very generous donor gave $10,000 to the cause, a charity group I work with also donated, with the rest raised on the day,’ he said.
Well over 200 were in attendance and both the early morning and afternoon sessions were fully booked.
‘It was great to have fine weather and to get the event moving without any delays or postponing it,’ Mathew said.
