I am glad the hydrogen-powered waste truck will be quiet and emit low emissions because otherwise it makes no sense.
The range of the truck is 300 km but one third of that will be used every time it has to be refuelled because it will have to go back and forth to Chinderah (around 100 km).
At current 2025 rates, hydrogen fuel is estimated to be two-to-three times more expensive to operate than diesel on a per-kilometre basis (without the cost of refuelling).
If ‘the environmental benefits’ are front-of-mind for Council they should look into BEV trucks and buses. BEVs convert a high percentage (often 70–80 per cent) of the energy from the grid to wheel power. Whereas FCEVs are less efficient – large energy losses occur when creating hydrogen, compressing it, transporting and then converting it back to electricity (often around 30-40 per cent efficiency).
