Trump’s violation of Venezuela’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, the abduction of its president and theft of its oil shipments are a display of tyrannical thuggery and moral decay, not a sign of strength but rather a loss of soft power and standing on the world stage.
Contrary to his claims, Trump has not gained ownership or control over Venezuela, its people or resources. Instead, he has alienated and infuriated much of Latin America with his arrogant, imperialist language and lethal actions, while simultaneously angering part of his political base and some US oil majors, who weren’t consulted beforehand.
The reasons for Trump’s abduction of Maduro are as bizarre and erratic as Trump himself. Most of the public messaging about narco-terrorism and the illicit oil trade is misleading or false. The primary motivation for this attempt at extraterritorial jurisdiction is cynical political opportunism and populist optics.
The Trump administration’s explicit contempt for international law and constitutional constraints is meant to convey strength and dominance, but actually signifies stupidity and incompetence. It’s a misguided appeal to American exceptionalism in the hope of gaining approval and support in the upcoming mid-term elections.
And while the international consequences aren’t yet apparent to Trump, they’re bound to haunt the rest of his presidency.
