We live in what feels like the forgotten corner of the Byron Shire.
Our neighbourhood of Booyong is a pristine rural village – and it is being slowly destroyed by an industrial-scale abattoir that has outgrown its location and its licence.
Massive triple-decked semi-trailers roar along narrow lanes never designed for them, destroying roads and rattling homes as they pass in the early hours.
The stench on some days is inescapable. Screaming livestock day and night, seven days a week. And then there is the irrigation pump servicing the facility’s wastewater treatment plant – running continuously from 7am, often until 11pm, seven days a week, well above any reasonable noise tolerance.

For four decades The Echo has printed the stories some people loved, some people hated, and some pretended not to read. If you want us to keep telling the truth, the real truth, not the sugar-coated version. We’ll need your support to keep the presses rolling.
