Eight event management students from Kingscliff TAFE who spent the last week of their study tour at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, later enjoyed a laugh at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Student Carolyn Lowe said the atmosphere at the Games has just been electrifying.

‘Everyone is smiling and talking spontaneously, it’s not uncommon to meet the athletes in the street wearing their medals, to or catch a glimpse of celebs, such as, Billy Connolly driving by,’ Carolyn said..

With the Gold Coast to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Tammy Papalia, teacher of event management, said the study tour has opened up many opportunities for her students to meet and learn from event professionals currently involved in staging world class events.

‘During the games, the students have attended the gymnastic, athletic events and the closing ceremony,’ Tammy said.

‘They also received a special invitation to attend the official Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games function, held in Glasgow last week and hosted by Jann Stuckey MP.

‘This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to network with many of the organising committee for the 2018 Games.

‘They especially enjoyed the opportunity to rub shoulders with Prince Edward, City of Gold Coast, Councillor Tom Tate, and many of the Australian Athletes.

‘The experiences the students have had over the last two weeks will place them in a unique position to gain future employment whether that is in Australia or on the global stage.’
