
The weekend was a big one for the young folk of the Byron area, many partying hard at Splendour – but a handful of great blokes also volunteered their time for a local garden in need of some TLC.
A team of Byron Rugby players put the bye round to good use by tackling the Byron Youth Activity Centre.
Byron Rugby’s Community Projects manager Andy Teuma said that is was great to give back to the community and lend a helping hand to projects like the BYS. ‘The YAC’s work with Byron’s Youth is priceless,’ he said.
The Byron Rugby players spent Saturday morning filling three skips with overgrown green waste and helped landscape the gardens.
Byron’s co-captain Darrell Montgomery said it’s always important to keep the community and Rugby together. ‘Rugby teaches discipline, self-sacrifice and team work which can transfer to all situations in life.’
The lad’s efforts were rewarded with some cut oranges at ‘halftime’ and a full-time sausage sizzle feast put on by Byron Youth Service.
BYS director Teeya Blatt was thrilled to see the results on Monday. ‘There’s no measuring the effects of having eight active, lovely men, beautify this valuable community space, and to do it all for the young people”
Byron Youth Service would like to say a big thanks to Byron Skips and Bunnings for their generous donations and a huge thank-you to the kind hearted Rugby players who sacrificed their day and set a good example for our young people.
Byron Bay Rugby return to the Recreation Grounds this Saturday at 2pm to face Southern Cross University, after being awarded the Minor Premiership last Thursday after their defeat of Bangalow Rebels.
