Byron’s young Wildcats and Rams put in some gutsy performances in Friday’s penultimate round of the Football Far North Coast Summer Youth League to come away with one hard-won point apiece.

The Byron girls dominated the match and, but for a couple of momentary lapses, would have deservedly claimed the three points.

Eva Salmon and Maddie Batson were the Cats’ goal-scorers in a 2–2 draw.

Down several key players, the Byron boys had their hands full with Lismore’s all-conquering Richmond Rovers in their battle to stay in contention.

True to form, Rovers came out firing and the pressure was on the Byron midfield and backs from the opening.

The match was soon a high-speed end-to-end battle, with relentless pressure from Rovers and a series of dangerous counterattacks from the Rams. A smooth buildup from the Byron midfield put striker Aaron Walker on the spot in the 27th minute and Byron took a 1–0 lead.

The goal inspired another five minutes of Rovers’ extraordinary intensity and the Lismore boys took a superb equaliser before the break.

The second half was a dogged but fiery contest of endurance as both sides worked hard to break the deadlock.

The final 1–1 scoreline delivered one vital point and the Championship title to Rovers. The Byron boys were the only team to take points from the Champions this year and came close to a major upset.
