The u/14 Kingscliff Wolves football team has embraced the challenge of a major fundraising project as they set their sights on touring California late in 2017.
The boys want to play in the Orange County Tournament of Champions but will also have the opportunity to tour some college campuses that have well developed football programs.
These will help the boys understand what opportunities there are for playing, refereeing and coaching overseas, according to Barry Saunders, Kingscliff Wolves coaching technical adviser.
There are several ways the team intends to raise the money, some tried and tested and some new.
There will be sponsorship opportunities for businesses, applications for grants, family contributions, and of course raffles and sausage sizzles.
Fun working hard
Will Edwards has been playing for the Kingscliff Wolves since he was five years old and reckons it is going to be fun working hard to raise the money and getting everyone excited about the trip.
‘I hope we learn stuff we can use later in life,’ he said. The tour will help the boys to broaden their horizons within the world of football and also for future career and life opportunities.
‘Through this type of life experience the boys will bring back a totally different perspective of how the game is played and run,’ Barry said.
‘This trip will also show the boys that there are so many different pathways available to them through the power of football, other than becoming a professional player.
‘The boys playing for the Wolves Football Club have a deep love and understanding, not just of the game of football but of the benefits it can bring to their lives.
‘Most of the boys have been playing together for the club since they were five years old and have developed strong friendships among all the players in their age group,’ he said.
