As a white person I am horrified by the senseless death of African American George Floyd. This death, which happened during Reconciliation Week, shines the spotlight on the plight of peoples of colour globally.
Deaths in custody are still happening in Australia, more than 30 years after the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. There is need to focus on reconciling the clash between the ‘freedom to’ and the ‘freedom from’ belief systems embraced by people living in the same country. Only then may we live harmoniously.
Skin colour should never determine an individual’s level of safety. Just societies celebrate difference and diversity.
