Mullum residents rally over second ‘woeful’ massive DA

A community gathering last night heard of the concerns around the second attempt to plonk a large block of units at the entrance to Mullumbimby.

The rising floodwater has meant there are evacuation orders for low lying properties at Tumbulgam, Billinudgel, The Pocket, Mullumbimby, Uki, Coraki and surrounding areas.

The State Emergency Services (SES) have said that ‘People in these areas need to closely monitor weather and road closures and make informed decisions early based on individual circumstances. Residents should monitor the situation and be prepared to evacuate when instructed to do so.’

SES – What we are expecting:

Once floodwater begins inundating the area, road access may be cut. If you remain in the area after this time, you may become trapped and it may be too dangerous for NSW SES to rescue you.

What you need to do:

Simple things you can do now:

  • Lift possessions and important items above the predicted flood height.
  • Take pets, essential items, warm clothes, medicines, insurance documents and valuables with you.
  • Leave as early as possible to avoid restricted roads.
  • Share this information with family, friends and neighbours and help others where possible

For emergency help in floods and storms, call the NSW State Emergency Service on 132 500. In life threatening situations call triple zero (000) immediately.

Ballina

Ballina Shires Council is urging Cumbalum and Ballina Heights residents to remain at home with flood waters rising.

Deadmans Creek Road is now closed. Tamarind Drive is closed from Gallans Road.

‘Residents needing to return to their properties tonight can only access Cumbalum and Ballina Heights via the (closed) off ramp from the Pacific Highway. RMS will allow entry to locals only,’ said a Ballina Shire Council spokesperson,

The southern end of North Creek Road is also closed north of Tamarind Drive.

Links Ave in East Ballina also has water over the road. The corner of Eltham Road and Teven Road is also closed.

‘Ballina Shire Council is asking all residents to stay at home and only leave their properties for essential reasons.

‘Several local roads have been closed. Ballina Shire Council staff are regularly checking roads across our shire and signposting flooded roads. Not all urban roads can be signposted but may have water over the road, so be aware of changing conditions and do not drive in flood waters.’
