There is nothing like the warm embrace of community to provide healing, and that’s certainly been the case for local Timothy Hanley.

Tim had a tragic fall from a ladder four months ago, which resulted in a burst fracture to his L1 vertebra.

He is currently in a wheelchair, unable to walk.

After spinal surgery, Tim has been released from a long initial rehab in the Spinal Injury Unit at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. While he has a long road to recovery ahead, it hasn’t been easy moving back home to Mullum

Tim and his partner, Michelle Popple (who you may know as one of our fabulous local midwives), were horrendously flooded in the 2022 floods. Their Mullumbimby home is still in disarray after being extensively damaged and their insurance company are failing to pay up.

Despite those challenges, he is very positive, and ready to work hard to try and get back up and walking again in the future.

Friends and loved ones have pulled together a huge fundraiser campaign, called Timmy’s Road to Recovery, which will also help with the home renovation and modifications needed to accommodate Tim’s wheelchair.

$18,000 prize pool

A community fundraiser event is planned at the Common People Brewery in Bangalow on December 2, where $2 from every beer sold will be donated to the fund.

A huge online raffle with a prize pool of $18,000 is on offer: www.rafflelink.com.au/timmys-fundraiser.

The winners will be announced on the evening, and there’s also be some impressive auction items up for grabs plus activities for the kids!

While adjusting to life back in Mullum and in between rehab sessions, Timmy has also designed some merch that will be for sale at the event, featuring his well-known sign off ‘you are loved’.

The funds raised are to support Tim in his huge recovery and the many modifications to his home to help him live actively and comfortably moving forward, five per cent of proceeds will be going to the Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation to aid in the research towards spinal injury treatment.

Merch and raffle tickets are available at store.elevenanchors.com.

Story provided by Tim’s friends and family.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

More than a Play

Still Here by Dave & the Daves is more than a play; it’s a 60-minute lifeline on stage that champions mental health through laughter, music, and the art of storytelling. A bit of slapstick, a healthy dose of character comedy, and a few raw truths about navigating life with depression, Still Here is an intoxicating blend of uproarious laughter and heartfelt empathy.

Interview with The Versace Boys

The Versace Boys were born in the back of a gold-plated Porsche parked at the Versace Palace on the Goldie. They grew up only eating with silver spoons and often crashing expensive automobiles their parents bought for them. They realised young that they weren’t only made for the world of fashion but that they could also write sick bangers.

Mix Artist

In the heart of the Byron Shire, just 5 min from Mullum town centre, lies one of the most professional music recording studios on the Australian East Coast. The Mix Artist recording facility is a custom-built recording studio, designed and built by world-class studio designer John Sayers. The large control room and the three independent live rooms are acoustically-treated to the highest standards. The studio has plenty of daylight, and line-of-sight between all studio rooms. The centre piece of the studio is a large scale analogue console with 36 inline channels plus a beautiful selection of high-end outboard gear. The studio is operated by award-winning engineer Jan ‘Yarn’ Muths (Fyah Walk, Jesse Morris Band), in addition to freelance engineers Jim Bonnefond (Kool & The Gang, Savage Garden, The Cockroaches), Saphia Smereka (Bernard Fanning) and Nathan Stanborough (From Crisis To Collapse).
