The annual Woodchop was held from Thursday to Saturday last week in Banner Park in Brunswick Heads with competitors and spectators watching the clouds and dodging showers.
One of the highlights of the event was the Jill Sawing Championship for the New South Wales Title which was held on Friday evening with seven women vying for their name at the top.
As well as the Jill title there were heats and finals of the 250mm Standing Block Handicap, Jill Underhand Handicap, 250mm Junior Underhand Handicap (under 18s), Three Man Relay, Jill and Jill Sawing, One Man Combo, 250mml Standing Block Handicap, 300 mm Underhand Championship, Veterans Standing Block and the ‘Gobbler’ Standing Block.
The Gobbler
The Gobbler is famous in Bruns – it’s an invitational event with eight woodcutters being chosen by the woodchop ring crew. The ring crew also chip in (see what I did there) with cash for the prize – a winners takes all that goes to the fastest time overall. This year the pot was $1,570.
The Gobbler is also a memorial chop to commemorate Tony ‘Gobbler’ Kennedy who tragically died in an accident in the foreset several years ago.
The ring crew also chooses the event and this year the Gobbler was a standing block event.
