Designed to recognise ordinary people in the community who are doing extraordinary things, Ballina Shire is now seeking nominations for its 2025 Australia Day Awards.

Nominees might be humble quiet achievers, generous community contributors, or larger-than-life characters known for their passion and courage.

‘We want to celebrate the individuals and groups who make a remarkable impact on our shire. But most importantly, we want to thank them for all that they do,’ said Ballina Mayor Sharon Cadwallader.

‘In choosing recipients we look at the nominee’s achievements in the year prior to receiving the award, as well as their past achievements and ongoing contribution to the Ballina Shire community.’

Local heroes

In 2025, the local awards will introduce a new open category called Local Hero, honouring an individual who demonstrates innovation and enterprise, whether through their professional career or voluntary efforts.

The age bracket for Young Citizen of the Year has been lowered to under 25, while nominees for Senior Citizen of the Year must be aged over 65. These changes aim to better reflect community demographics and contributions.

Community members are encouraged to nominate deserving candidates in the following categories:

  • Local Hero (open age): honouring a trailblazer making an impact in their field.
  • Young Citizen (under 25 years): recognising young achievers making a difference.
  • Senior Citizen (over 65 years): celebrating the wisdom and dedication of our seniors.
  • Volunteer of the Year (open age): applauding those who selflessly support our community.
  • Sports Achievement (individual, team, coach, sports administrator): honouring sports excellence and contributions.
  • Arts and Culture (individual or group): celebrating creative visionaries enriching our culture.
  • Environmental Award (individual or group): acknowledging eco-warriors protecting our environment.
  • Community Event of the Year (event held during 2024): spotlighting outstanding events held in 2024 that unite us.

The 2025 Ballina Shire Citizen of the Year will be chosen from all nominees across all categories.
