The Byron Shire Council says it’s started upgrading the Coogera Circuit Detention Basin at Suffolk Park.
The basin is off Bottlebrush Crescent and is said to regularly overflow during heavy rain, contributing to the flooding of nearby homes and properties.
Byron Shire Council Project Engineer Tom Coulthurst says workers will increase the capacity of the detention basin by raising the height of some of the basin wall, and, building a basin spillway connecting to stormwater drainage.
More than a hundred Suffolk Park properties are expected to benefit from reduced risk of flooding.
The council hopes to have the project finished by the end of the year, weather permitting, with any remaining work to be finished in early January.
The federal government’s Emergency Response Fund has contributed $550,000 towards the project, with $70,000 coming from the Byron Shire Council.
