Andy Beswick plans to swim a distance which is equivalent to the length of the English Channel. Photo supplied.

They say you can’t keep a good man down, and Andy Beswick is a living example of that. Beswick plans to swim 1,360 laps of the pool at the Lennox Aquatic Centre with a recovering broken leg, to raise money for kids in the Ballina region.

’On Saturday, December 14, I’ll be swimming 34km which is equivalent to the length of the English Channel – at Lennox Head Aquatic Centre to raise funds for Our Kids,’ says Beswick. ‘With this swim I am aiming to help Ballina Hospital purchase a vital video laryngoscope which costs $19,200.’

A broken ankle

Earlier this year Beswick injured himself on a run. ‘The reason I took on this challenge is I broke my ankle in this year’s Chinny Charge and I wanted to set myself a goal while healing my leg and raising support for a local charity.’

Beswick says the event is open for anyone in the community to participate in, regardless of swimming ability. ‘The ways people can get involved are by donating directly through the website, purchasing raffle tickets with the draw held at the event, or, come down on the 14 to the Lennox Head Aquatic Centre and join me.’

You can help by sponsoring a lap, or you can register to swim some laps with Andy.

‘The Aquatic Centre have kindly offered to stay open extended hours and people are encouraged to come and swim with me. The pool fee will be donated straight to the cause.

‘All of the money you raise as part of Swim for Our Kids goes directly to Our Kids to purchase a Video Laryngoscope for Ballina Hospital.’
