Ron Cooper, Kingscliff

So Cr Polglase has decided that my “letters have gone on long enough”.  Well here’s another one.  What are you going to do about it Warren?

I’m not “undermining vital community discussion”.  There is no vital community discussion to undermine.  It’s just an expensive shopfront sales job that’s using our rates to sell us something we neither need nor want – something that will degrade out lifestyle and reduce Kingscliff’s attraction for tourists.

Don’t just take my word for it.  The largest ever survey of Kingscliff residents and visitors that showed 97% of respondents wanted to retain Kingscliff’s existing character and its three storey height limit.  In the face of these overwhelming numbers, Council planners supported by Cr Polglase have proceeded to increase the heights of buildings and change Kingscliff forever.

As for increasing building heights to “accommodate Kingscliff population”, that’s what the Gold Coast did Cr Polglase.  Let’s not repeat that mistake.  We have enough residential land coming on stream to double the Tweed’s population – Cobaki Lakes, Terranora Area E, and Kings Forest.  Kingscliff has enough land to increase its population by another 50% without increasing our three storey height limit.

I have now spoken to thousands of residents and visitors while collecting the Lot 490 petition (16,000), the new Heights of Buildings petition (3500 and growing) and the Future of Kingscliff survey (1250).  It’s not just what I want for Kingscliff.  I’m genuinely representing the views of a very large number of residents and visitors.

And, Cr Polglase, I have not resorted to scare mongering to get such overwhelming support.

The latest petition was deliberately commenced after the shopfront “consultation” was completed.  There has been no change to the attitude of residents and visitors following that “prize-winning” consultation.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. At present there is a serious lack of community consultation on many issues within the Tweed.
Unfortunately with such an unbalanced Council in regards to the number of Councillors we have three Councillors being Polglase, Byrne and Youngblutt driving their own agendas.
Until our Mayor returns from sick leave or the September Council elections occur we are trapped in an undemocratic situation. I believe the Administrors should be brought back in!
