The Byron Ultimate Disc team had a ‘successful and happy’ Australia Day Beach Ultimate Championship at Coolangatta in January.
A team of 12 players, including four women and two father-son combinations ventured north for the event, according to spokesperson Paul Glennie.
‘There was a good ages split. It is great to see the kids coming through,’ he said.
The BUD finished fourth out of seven after narrowly losing the battle for bronze by two points, 12–10.
The side was down 9–5 at half time and made a huge comeback ensuring an exciting finish, but just couldn’t get over the line to claim a place on the podium.
They also played a semifinal against one of the tournament’s top ‘all-star’ sides.
‘We showed we could match the best by holding the game to five all at half time,’ Paul said.
As fatigue set in the fitter players pulled away to win the game 12–5.
BUD also played against the Stoners ‘Far North Coast’, an ultimate Frisbee-side based in The Channon.
‘It was very enjoyable and exciting to see the sport, and talent pool, growing in the northern rivers,’ he said.
BUD player Emma Sweeney was awarded Most Valuable Female Player of the tournament.
